"Improving Your Revocable Deferred Giving Effort Through an Enhanced Resource Toolkit"

Jason James Shuba, JD

Director of Gift Planning

University of Illinois Foundation

You can't be everywhere at once. Whether gift planning is part of your responsibilities in an organization of three or you're a full-time gift planner surrounded by dozens of gift officers, you need to prepare your colleagues to advance revocable deferred gift conversations as best they can in situations when you're not available. Are your colleagues prepared to respond effectively if a donor mentions he's thinking of including your organization in his will or via a retirement plan? What if a donor has already provided for your institution in his living trust and is wary of sharing further information? If your answer is "I'm not sure," you're not alone. Thinking about these and similar questions, the University of Illinois Foundation gathered its assorted recommendations and guidelines into a toolkit designed to empower our colleagues in this portion of their donor work, however large those responsibilities may be. The result has rolled out to advancement management praise and gift officer gratitude. This session will (1) tap our toolkit component resources (including a "Choose Your Own Adventure"-style donor-interaction guide) to help you kickstart your own effort, and (2) feature a workbook you can use to help translate these resources to a toolkit customized for your shop's unique needs.

Session Learning Objectives
Following this session, you will be better able to:

  1. Gather the right internal data, resources, and stakeholders for successful toolkit planning
  2. Select and craft the appropriate toolkit components based on your shop's counting policies and gift officer needs
  3. Effectively roll-out your new toolkit
